Fashion career employers include:
TV/film/radio broadcasting companies Advertising agencies - commercials/advertising/music videos Periodical/magazine/newspaper companies Retail stores/clothing boutiques/malls Fashion runway shows/related events
Qualifications:
Fashion is a varied field, with diverse employment hiring options. Many
schools/colleges offer specialized formal accredited degree programs
for students starting out in the business. Although not necessary, a
degree or certification in fashion can give a prospective job applicant
a major edge when applying for employment over a candidate without
education/training in fashion. This is especially true when applying to
large companies who get flooded with qualified resumes. A fashion
degree/certification is not required of course, when an individual
opens their own fashion business, but it can be beneficial when seeking
sponsors/advertisers to promote a new business. Regardless, building a
solid reputation in the industry and having a complete resume
which lists one’s qualifying experience and accomplishments, is a must
for anyone seeking a successful career in fashion. Modeling Categories:

Guidelines for Professional Modeling:
1. The Physical Requirements for High Fashion Female Modeling Height
is a critical factor if you are considering becoming a high fashion
model. Top agencies require a girl's height to be between 5'8" to 6'. Bust: 32-35" Waist: 22-25" Hips: 33-36" 2. Do you have the “Commercial Modeling” look? If
you weren't blessed with height or unusual looks, but you have charisma
and a gift for selling, commercial modeling may be just what you are
made for. You will need to practice posing and giving the “look” or
“feel” to advertise a product that will help sell it. 3. Other alternative modeling: Glamour, Beauty or Body Part Modeling? If
you are one of the lucky ones with a flawless complexion, you may
decide on becoming a beauty model. For those that have a great body and
don't mind showing it off, glamour modeling may be your choice. Height is not an issue in glamour modeling, but you must have a toned body with 34-B Bust, 22-24" Waist and 34" Hips. Hand,
foot & leg modeling are also interesting off shoots of modeling.
This is a very specialized type of modeling where you can be “famous”
but your face may be unknown. Commercials and print ads often use body
part models for close ups on hands and such and another model for
spokesperson or facial close ups. 4. Are you too old to begin a modeling career? No!
There are women 35 and older who have gorgeous looks and bodies. In
fact, there is a specific market for older print and commercial models
even in their 60’s. This a smaller market but in demand. Runway models
are less fortunate. The typical age of runway models is 16-26. 5. Standard, petite or plus sized figure for modeling? Do you feel like you either weigh too much or maybe too little to become a female model? Don't
get discouraged because there is a place for plus size and petite
modeling in the industry. Remember, if you are a plus or petite size and
plan to start a modeling career, you still want your body to be
well-proportioned and toned. Plus size models and high fashion In
recent years the fashion industry has made some progress in improving
the quality of the plus size clothes. Recently more catalogs and
clothing advertisements have started using plus size models in
displaying the clothing. Seeing the plus size models posing with
confidence and poise helps larger individuals to feel more comfortable
and acceptable. Seeing the plus size models on the runway and in
magazines helps everyone to realize that not everyone is designed to be
tall and skinny. You can become a role model for other plus sized
people. They do not have to think that they cannot have accomplishments
because they are larger sized. Plus size fashion still has a ways to
go regarding variety and style, but it seems like each year there are
more items to choose from, more comfortable & complimentary fabrics
and that the fashion industry beginning to cater more to those of us
that have more curves. 6. Are your body and mind both fit for modeling? Even
though having the right height and looks are essential in becoming a
model, there are many other aspects that are very important. Keep
your body and mind in shape by eating healthy and getting daily
exercise. Drink plenty of water and AVOID tobacco, alcohol and drugs.
Get plenty of sleep. Your body heals when you sleep. Bring out your true model beauty with an outgoing personality, good attitude, mental alertness and professionalism. Self confidence is even more important than beauty or ability Self
confidence IS attractiveness. No matter how beautiful you are, your
chances of becoming a model are slim without the confidence to believe
in yourself, to try new things, to work hard & to network to make
new contacts. So, being a sexy and successful model is not possible
without believing in your self. The importance of excellent communication skills Whatever
your job is, improving communication skills leads to greater success.
Smart people make improving communication skills a lifelong endeavor.
Through communication we relay to others our ideas, feelings,
perceptions and desires. Improving communication skills now can make the
difference between success and failure, profit or loss later Communicating
is not only speaking but also listening. Are you a good listener? A
good listener will learn from others. Take advice from others with
experience. Learn from mistakes. Accept criticism gracefully. Body
language is a strong language you project. Certain gestures and
posturing make a positive or negative impression on your audience. Talk
to yourself in a mirror. Eliminate gestures and poses that do not fit
your speech or the image you are trying to project. Good use of your
eyes to convey emotions is important too. How's your vocabulary?
Expanding your vocabulary improves communication skills. Use a
dictionary or Roget’s Thesaurus. Write down new words you hear and look
them up. Read as much as you can and vary what you read so you can be
comfortable and confident speaking and voicing your opinion on many
different topics. Go on line and search the internet for "online
spelling tests". You'll find many sites with word lists of varying
difficulty. Test yourself. If you like on line spelling games, try games
like Scrabble or Text Twist. These practices can dramatically improve
your communication skills. Correct spelling is important. Errors
communicate a lack of attention to detail, careless work habits and
implies laziness. A prospective employer may not hire you because of
misspellings. It implies sloppy work. Is your speech vague or
ambiguous? Do other people misunderstand what you’re saying? This is
usually due to choosing words that allow more than one interpretation.
Rodale's Synonym Finder can help you find the words with the exact
meanings you want to express. If you feel shy or uncomfortable
talking with others or in groups, join a Toastmaster's club where you’ll
learn to become comfortable with speaking in public and can improve
your confidence. Insider tips for modeling: If you are
confident, assertive, intelligent, resistant to peer pressure and
willing to listen and learn, you have many of the traits that may help
you to become a successful fashion model. 1. Talk to other models Talk to someone you know that is already involved in the modeling world. Ask them about the following: • How do you get started modeling? • Should you go to modeling school, learn by posing for photographers, or have an agent help you learn? • How important s having a portfolio? What should I put in there? • What is a cast or open call? What is a “blind call”? Knowing the answers to these few questions will help you tremendously in making your decision about becoming a fashion model. 2. See who top models and designers are and what they’re doing Agencies
like their models to be knowledgeable about modeling magazines,
designers and photographers. Keep current on who’s popular and in
demand. Know who are the top models and what they look like…they are
your competition but you can also learn from them. Look at fashion
magazines and fashion related reality TV shows to see what the latest
styles are. Read and learn as much as you can about fashion designers.
Research every aspect on the internet about IMG, Women Management and
other industry giant agencies. 3. Decide whether you want to be a part-time or full-time model Modeling
careers can be full or part time, depending upon your situation. You
can model just for fun or to make an income. Determine what you want to
do then set your goals and be determined to reach them. You will face
many rejections, so be very persistent. If you really want to get
started as a fashion model, it will take a lot of time and hard work.
This is the case no matter if you go into glamour, runway, figure or
commercial work. You’ll have to set goals and work toward them
daily. There are no shortcuts or easy way to do this. Other models are
working just as hard as you to reach their goals so write down a routine
and practice daily. Fashion modeling is very competitive so work hard
to succeed. 4. What requirements are needed to get started modeling? If you plan to become a typical runway fashion model, the following physical attributes are the “gold standard”. • You need to be at least 5'8" tall or taller ( Especially for runway modeling ) • Your height should be flattered by your body weight (average for a model 108-125 lbs.) and proportionate. •
Your skin should always look smooth and clear, without lots of pimples
or blemishes. If you have skin concerns, see your dermatologist now. • Your hair should always be clean, styled and healthy. Avoid excessive over-dying, dryness, frizziness and split-ends. •
Your teeth should be well taken care of, straight and white. Stay away
from coffee and cigarettes. Agents and clients love to see a model give a
vivid bright smile. • Your posture has a big affect on how
people perceive you. Keep your chin up and shoulders back. Good posture
exudes confidence. 5. Requirements for portfolios and comp cards The
right portfolio makes a strong impression and can mean the difference
with being hired or not. However, there is no one answer to the question
"What do I need in a model portfolio?" Whether you are looking to
be a fashion, commercial, glamour or plus-sized model can effect what
images you decide to use. Preteen, teen, female, and male models also
might want to focus on different types of shots. There is room to be
creative. Help yourself stand out and get noticed, which can help you
get work. There are, however, some types of shots that are typically
included. Pictures to include in your portfolio When considering
what you need in your model portfolio, the main answer is really great
photos of yourself in a wide variety so that you can showcase your
versatility. Show different “looks”, poses and styles. The standard
shots should include a head shot, a full body shot (usually in a swim
suit so your whole body can be seen), and a close up shot (usually shot
outdoors with ambient light and with little or no makeup). Usually you
want to include some sort of artistic or high fashion type shot as well.
There is no rule either about whether the images should be black and
white or color, so you might want to use a mix. Showcase your work
and emphasize your versatility, but it is important not have an
excessive number of photos. You’ll want quality versus quantity and you
want to limit the number to between eight and twenty photos, optimally. What are Comp Cards? (Formerly known as Zed Cards) Composite
cards are commonly known as comp cards. These are usually 6x9" cards
with a headshot on the front. The back side will have between 4 to 6
additional photos along with the model's statistics. The stats to
include are ... • NAME • ADDRESS • CONTACT PHONE NUMBER • EMAIL and/or WEBSITE • TYPE OF MODELING ( i.e. commercial, fashion, runway, event, glamour, artistic, etc.) • HEIGHT • WEIGHT • BUST SIZE (WOMEN) or CHEST SIZE (MEN) • WAIST SIZE • HIP SIZE ( WOMEN ) • SHOE SIZE • EYE COLOR • HAIR COLOR Comp
cards are very inexpensive (+ or - $100 per hundred, full color) and
you can leave them with the agent to keep on file. You can typically
have them printed for you at photo shops and often are a semi glossy
finish. What size should the portfolio photos be? The number
and type of photos in your portfolio can vary, and the size can also
vary. Go on line to some of the agencies in your city and see what they
are requiring. You want to have the right size photos for the agencies
you are applying to. It is also a good idea to check out the other
submission requirements of the agencies that you are hoping to work for.
Some might require something specific, especially geared toward tall
girls and guys, and you want to make sure that both you and your
portfolio fit what they are looking for. Practice your runway walk
and posing so that you'll be ready for the professional photographer you
choose, to create an outstanding modeling portfolio you'll be proud to
show. Be prepared and you’ll be more likely to impress and succeed in
being hired. 6. The difference between open calls and blind calls Open calls for models An
open call is generally where models are invited to come in for
evaluation and possible interviews. Agencies typically hold open calls
on a weekly basis or less. This is when you have the opportunity to show
them that you’ve got and prove to them that you’re just what they’re
looking for. Men and women who plan to answer an open call for models
should take note: even if you are thin, it does not always mean that
you're in good shape. To look great, you have to groom properly and eat
foods that are good for you. (Avoid smoking, drugs, alcohol & fast
food.) This relates to your physique as well. Exercise to keep yourself
strong, fit & healthy is important, as is drinking a lot of water to
keep your muscles fit & skin smooth, clear & supple. Get plenty
of rest. Exhausted models don’t look or perform their best. Showcasing your beautiful self entails taking the time and effort to take great care of your skin, teeth, hair and body. Men
should focus on getting sculpted. You will need a ripped body to
compete with the models sitting next to you at open-call. Women should
focus on toning to firm the abdomen, thighs and arms but don’t get
“ripped” unless you are planning on focusing on sports related modeling
only. Too much muscle definition in women will greatly limit your
modeling demographics. At the first meeting with a talent agent,
show them the very best you can be. Dress in a classic and simple style
and keep make up to a minimum when interviewing with the agencies Bring
your comp card, resume, and portfolio (or at least, 5x7 and 8x10 head
shot photos). You won’t necessarily know ahead of time which size photo
the agency will ask you for so be ready with both, although most want
8x10’s. Some will want color photos only & others will accept either
black & white or color. Check with the agency’s website ahead of
time to make sure you meet their specifications and requirements to
apply. Don’t waste your time or theirs if you don’t meet their
requirements. There are always other agencies to apply to that you DO
qualify for. Agency websites will usually have information on how to
submit photos and/or the times & days of their open calls. Follow
these guidelines precisely and do not telephone to follow up. They will
call you if they are interested. Most agencies will keep your photo and
resume or comp card on file for 6-12 months only. After a year, reapply
if you qualify. If you are submitting your resume, photo and/or comp
card on line or by snail mail, include a letter that states the dates
when you will be in town as “In town from ____ to ____”. Make sure your
name, phone number and email address are on the back your comp card as
well as the back of your photo for snail mail. Often the open call
can take hours due to many potential applicants being present, so be
prepared with water and high energy snacks to keep you energized for the
interview. Keep your mouth clean with a toothbrush and toothpaste. In
reality, professional modeling isn't easy. A lot of people do succeed
by responding to an open call, but having some training greatly
increases your chances. As a matter of fact, there are many casting
calls which actually give priority to candidates from modeling schools.
They assume that, if you have gone to a modeling school, you will have a
professional attitude and consistent performance, picture after
picture, shoot after shoot, and runway walk after runway walk. Non-represented casting calls or “blind casting calls” Blind
casting calls take advantage of the fact that you probably know nothing
about the industry. You are asked to participate, often at substandard
rates, and receive little or no credit for your work. They are also
typically one shot deals, which are much less likely to furnish
connections than going through modeling agents who know the industry.
You might have to put up with come-ons from obnoxious egotistical
photographers, listen to commercial modeling job offers from
unprofessional producers which never come through, and a host of other
frustrating situations that are unnecessary. 7. Are modeling schools a good idea? Modeling Schools The
world of modeling is unique. It’s fun, stressful, competitive, exciting
and can be disappointing. It can be difficult to tell what a talent
scout or agent is searching for. Just because you are beautiful, doesn't
mean you'll be chosen. A model has to have that “something extra” that
stands out. Agents only pick about 1 in every 20,000 people they see. Reputable
modeling schools train you in runway walks, poses, gestures and facial
expressions. They also train you in posing for photographers for runway
and commercial prints. Some schools also incorporate acting and training
in spokesperson modeling. They often teach about diet, exercise, hair
care & styling as well as make up. They help students to build
confidence and skills to prepare them for the working model world.
Having a firm foundation in basic modeling skills can give a new model
an edge over other untrained models when competing for gigs. Of
course, a good modeling agency will help you out as well as modeling
schools will. The great thing about modeling agents is that they handle
the business side of things for you. 8. Choosing a modeling agency Once
you have decided that modeling is definitely what you want to do, your
next step is to find a legitimate model agency or management company
that will guide and direct your new career and hopefully find you work. If you are under 18, never go alone & bring a parent every time! An agency should never charge you a fee to represent you. They make their money from each job you complete. It’s
a good idea to have a lawyer review any contract before you sign it so
you know exactly what your rights and responsibilities are to the agent
and the agencies’ rights and responsibilities to you. Know what you need to do if you need to terminate an agency contract early. Beware of limitations and exclusions in your contract. Remember that contracts ARE negotiable. Modeling Agents: Someone to represent and speak for you The
best thing about modeling agents is that they represent you and are
there to support you. They help set up those first important
introductions with reputable photographers, producers, directors,
stylists and business companies. Agents know how to talk to
photographers and producers to set up gigs and to make sure that
everything goes just as it is supposed to go to keep you happy…and
safe. They may also help to coach you on how to make a good impression
with a particular client. They want you to be successful so they will be
too. Your agent’s income is dependent on keeping you happy and making
you money. They don't get a salary. They get a cut of every gig they
find for you & their cut is typically 10-20% of what you make. The
less you make, the less they make. Agents also negotiate contracts;
help you set up a good portfolio of shots and much more. They know how
to handle publicity and how to generate it. Without a modeling agent,
getting involved in the fashion industry can be treacherous and
uncertain. Start with a local listing for an agent to begin with. If
you are working another job or going to school, local modeling calls and
jobs will be more convenient. When you are ready to expand into a
major market, plan to make your move and have enough money for expenses
for a minimum of 8-12 weeks. Make a list of all the agencies that
represent models in your age range. To find out if you have the look
they want, you’ll need to contact several modeling agencies. Go to the
websites of these agencies & LOOK at their models. Do any of their
models look similar to you? Do MANY of their models look similar to you?
How so? Remember, agents are always looking for a specific set of
physical criteria on female models, and the look they want changes from
day to day. If many of the models at many of the agencies in one
particular market look similar to you, chances are you will work in that
market. If the opposite is true, chances are that you won’t work in
that market. Whether the agencies reject or accept you is a matter of
whether they will make money on you, not whether you are pretty enough.
If you are rejected, don’t take it personally. You may just not have
the particular look that one agency desires, but another may. Use
those 8-12 weeks to meet people. Network, network, network. Do all the
photo tests you possibly can with all the photographers you can possibly
meet in that city! (Stay safe of course! Have someone go with you if
possible.) Go to the open calls at all the big agencies you qualify for.
Listen to what they have to say! Take any advice they give you.
Remember that it’s all a learning process. If they want to represent
you, great, but if they say no thanks, then move on. Don’t dwell on the
rejections and don’t give up easily. It may take a lot of time and
perseverance to succeed.
Modeling Tips: Runway:
Copyright 2007–2010 GigRight
Fashion runway shows usually exist for the common purpose so that an
individual or group of competing clothing industry designers, can have a
place to showcase their upcoming seasonal line of clothing and related
accessories in front of a live audience. Most shows exist for the sole
intent of hopeful clothing designers eventually selling their products
to the general public in clothing stores for profit. However, many shows
are done for non-profit charity causes, hoping that the lure of
beautiful and glamorous runway models will encourage the audience to be
generous in donating money to their cause. Runway shows are usually
funded and sponsored by various companies, which may or may not be
related to the clothing industry. Often show promoters will begin
pre-show preparation and advertisement months in advance. While most
larger-scale professional shows will pay their models, many small local
shows will not. Shows usually charge an entrance fee ticket purchase to
audiences. Proceeds may be used for non-profit programs, for paying for
the cost of the show such as advertisement, venue rental, food catering,
stage, sound and lighting crew charges, and model agent costs when
applicable. Generally all aspiring new models are expected to ‘pay their
dues’ and perform in shows without payment, as a means of gaining
experience and building their resume portfolio. Models working under a
contract with an agency will often have to have their agent negotiate a
payment price with the show’s producer. It is not uncommon for one
modeling agency to split profits on their model with a competing
modeling agency. This is a win-win for the model, the model’s agency,
the 3rd party modeling agency who has contracted with the show, and for
the show’s producers. Models who eventfully sign a modeling contract
with an agency, need to be aware of how this industry works, and make
smart business decisions for themselves. When initially approached
by a prospective agent, models are often overwhelmed with excitement.
This is understandable, yet at the same time an aspiring career model
should do their homework and research the company before signing a
contract. Modeling contracts signed between model and agent vary
dramatically. Before signing, ask around. Call other modeling agencies
for contract comparison. Go online and look the company up with the
better business bureau (BBB). One of the best sources for checking an
agency’s business reputation, is by asking other fellow models. Word of
mouth travels fast in this industry. True, this may be your only agency
offer and it may be a great opportunity. Nonetheless, checkout the
company before signing. Unfortunately, as with any other talent industry
there are less reputable modeling agencies out there. These industry
sub-standard agencies often take advantage of new and desperate talent.
If you are approached by an agent or talent scout about doing full
nudity/adult modeling, please give this decision much thought before
signing. If you do take your career in this direction, keep in mind that
it could affect your ‘main stream’ modeling career in the long run.
Today, nudity in the modeling world is fairly common, but it is done so
in a matter of degrees. Most reputable agencies that cater to partial
nudity, do so in a professional and respectful approach. By contrast,
full nude modeling can border on pornography, which in the long term
could have a negative impact on your career. So when that contract
offer comes your way, please read between the lines before signing. You
can always ask for a short postponement while you do your research
before signing. Conflicting agency contracts sometimes arise. Once
you have signed a contract, occasionally you may be chosen to be in a
runway show represented by a competing agency. It is your responsibility
to call your agent’s office and find out what your options are. Keep a
copy of your signed contract handy at home, so you can review it as
needed. Usually with a gig that does involve another modeling agency,
that agency will split a percentage with your agent and you.
Having good skin complexion is essential. If you have a problem with
acne, pimples or blemishes, you should consult a dermatologist, someone
who specializes in skin care. You may have luck with some of the popular
over-the-counter skin care products. However, if after months of
repeated treatments with commercial products is not helping, seeking a
qualified skin care expert is the only solution. Skin care products are
expensive, so plan accordingly. Think of this expense as a necessary
investment for your career. Another reality to consider is having
good teeth. A 'model smile' with bright, shiny white teeth is necessary
to succeed in this business. This too can be an expensive investment.
Having healthy looking straight and proportional teeth translates into a
happy smile, and the industry demands this. Whitening strips are a good
inexpensive whiting method. However, for more radical dental problems
which may involve major reconstruction, recent dental technology can
often transform bad looking teeth into an amazing looking smile. Again,
these treatments can be expensive.
Hair should be healthy too. Excessive split-ends, tangles, dry or
damaged hair from frequent hair coloring can also signal a red flag to
prospective agents. Over-the-counter hair care products are affordable
and can work wonders, but be sure to consult a qualified hair stylist at
a reputable hair salon. Many salons combine hair and skin care.
Comp cards (formally called ZED cards) are a must for every model.
Comp cards are a photo card that you give out at auditions. Typically it
will have one large headshot photo on the front side, and up to four
smaller photos on the back side, along with your name, physical stats,
and contact information. Comp cards must only be designed and printed by
a professional printing service. You provide them with the electronic
files of your preferred photos. Choose only your best, highest quality
photos. These photos will be your ‘business card’, so they need to
represent your overall signature look that you are selling to the
industry and prospective talent agencies. You also need to have an
up-to-date resume. Keep it brief, not more than two hard copy pages. Resumes
should list your contact information, dates and locations of all actual
gigs that you performed in, regardless of whether or not you got paid
for them. Agents are looking for experience and confidence, and they
have no interest in which of your gigs paid or how much. They primarily
want models who are experienced and who are available to work when they
need you on a moments notice. You need to be ready and flexible, to
accommodate the agent’s time schedule.
Runway: Female Models:
Female and male runway model requirements vary dramatically.
Especially for the high fashion shows, outrageous Haute Couture and
Avant Garde flamboyant outfits and swimwear, these demands place female
runway models in a totally different category all together than their
male counterparts. Demand on females are very high in the glamour
industry, because women consumers make up the majority of the fashion
market. Because of this, designers and fellow glamour stylists put a
much larger emphasis on female models vs. male models. For women, pre-show hair and makeup take a minimum of 30 minutes, and often can take hours. Modeling
runway auditions and shows for women often require a minimum of 3” high
heeled shoes, and 4” heels are common. Occasionally some special shows
require even higher heels such as platform shoes. Learning to walk
upright, smoothly and confidently in high heels takes practice and can
be a bit of a challenge. It is an amazing choreography of balance and
coordination. Whenever possible, have a ‘backup’ pair of shoes. Heels
and straps can break, and designers often do not supply shoes at shows. A
small piece of masking tape stuck to the bottom of your shoe (ball of
your foot) can help prevent slipping on very smooth slippery runway
stage surfaces. Or, you can use a little sand paper and scuff up the
ball of your foot shoe surface, to help prevent sliding. Developing
your own ‘signature‘ cat walk is essential for success in the industry.
Strive to refine your own unique walk, that will set you apart from the
other female models. At the same time, perfect a walk that maintains
class and style, with a minimum of bounce. Do not over animate or swing
your arms, but at the same time keep your audience interested. You only
have seconds to impress them, so ‘strut your stuff’ and work the
audience. If you lose a shoe or even fall down, simply get back up and
keep walking confidently. Leave a shoe or other accessories behind and
just keep walking forward, always looking straight ahead. Doing so, they
will remember your confidence and class, not your mistakes. After all,
you are showcasing the designer’s clothing line, not you. The audience
is there to see the clothes, so never focus on yourself. Rather, focus
on the concept that a model is a ‘walking clothes hanger’. With all of
the modeling competition out there today, just be thankful that you are
lucky enough to have been chosen to in the designer’s show. As a
general rule when walking, keep your arms down at your sides with
minimal swinging, and only occasionally have your hands in your pants
pockets. This will vary from show to show depending on different
designers. Keep eye-to-audience contact to a minimum, and only
occasionally glance at them and never for more than a second. Keep your
audiences’ focus on the clothes that you are wearing. Most runway shows
will prefer eyes always forward, with minimal smiling. The common
‘attitude’ facial expression is generally preferred, but again this will
vary with different designers. The designer wants his/her audience to
look at and remember their clothing line, not you the model. Following
your designer’s every instruction throughout the show will keep your
designer happy. This is a win-win for both you as an aspiring model, and
for the designer. Even though it appears that the audience is only
looking at the clothing, they indeed are looking at you too. Every show
you model in, is one more gig that you can add to your resume. Agents,
designers and the general public are all watching you. Building a
professional reputation as a model takes time and patience, but will
eventually come with experience. There are no official industry
standards for height requirements. This will vary with each audition
depending on the designer’s needs. For female models, the minimum height
usually ranges between 5’ 8” to 5’ 10”. However, some shows
occasionally will allow shorter, but for most professional productions
expect at least 5’ 8” or taller for women. Traditionally, a woman’s
body weight is expected to be minimal, usually below average
height-weight-proportional. Recently weight demands have loosened up,
thus allowing women to be a little heavier. Realistically though, most
designers are looking for female models as slim as possible, with
typical waist sizes from size 0 to 5. Within the last few years, the
demand for plus-sized runway models have increased. Plus-size is a
newer model category addition to the industry, and is judged separately
from standard runway models. Height and waist size requirements will
vary with designers. Age for females models will range from children
to mid-twenties. Each show is completely different. Some shows will only
want females over 18. Others may only want early teens. Still others
may want a mixed range. Depending on what a specific designer is
showcasing, age restrictions will vary. Commonly heard is that a model’s
career is over at age 25, or even by age 18. This is more fiction than
fact. Fashion designers will hire models in their mid-twenties, and
although more rare, sometimes into their 30’s. The most prime window for
runway is between 18 and 23 however. Race and ethnicity will vary
similarly. One show may be looking for only Asian females over 18, while
other shows may need all races.
Runway: Male Models:
The same general principles apply to male runway models regarding
designer/model/audience focus. Obviously, male models have different
runway walk and clothing requirements than female models. It is common
knowledge in the industry that male runway modeling is less complex, and
thus less stressful for males compared to female models. Runway demands
on female models are centered on the latest seasonal women’s fashion
lines, eye-catching ‘cat walks’ in high heels. Especially for the high
fashion shows, outrageous Haute Couture and Avant Garde flamboyant
outfits and swimwear, place female runway models in a totally different
category all together, than their male counterparts.
This is not to
say that male models do not share equal spotlight or stress during
shows. However, male models for the most part usually have less to be
concerned with and to think about than women. Male wardrobes are usually
fairly simple to walk in, compared to high heels, hair and makeup,
dresses, sometimes including hats, jewelry or other accessories. For
women, pre-show hair and makeup take a minimum of 30 minutes, and often
can take hours. Male models have minimal pre-show preparation. Even the
average male runway walk is less complex. Overall, most would agree that
men have it easier than women models. Men primarily just have to focus
on being on time, following designer instructions, and keeping up with
the pace of the other models. General Fashion Articles:

Modeling Agencies England:
Make sure any agency in London/UK is a member of a professional trade body such as the Association of Model Agents (all A-list agencies) or the Association of Model and Talent Agents (A and B-list agencies). The AMA agencies combined account for 90% of all paid model jobs booked in the UK - if you are not with one of these agencies, you are with one of the hundreds of smaller agencies all chasing that remaining 10% of work - meaning there's a high chance you'll never get booked on a single job...
